This is a fantastic shot of Colorado Avalanche goaltender Patrick Roy battling Detroit Red Wings goalie Mike Vernon in one of the many fights that occurred during the infamous “Fight Night at The Joe” during the 1996-1997 regular season. This 8” x 10” photo has been signed by Roy and comes unframed.
Animosity that began with Claude Lemiuex’s brutal check from behind on Kris Draper during the 1996 Western Conference Finals between the Colorado Avalanche and Detroit Red Wings – which left the Wings’ Draper with a broken jaw and shattered check and orbital bones – finally came to a head in the last regular season meeting between the two teams on March 26, 1997.
The game saw nine fights, including Darren McCarty’s infamous battle with Lemieux, in which he avenged Draper by pummeling Lemieux until he fell to the ice and covered himself in a turtle position.
As McCarty continued to lay punches on Lemieux, Roy skated to center ice to help Lemieux. He was intercepted and clotheslined by Brendan Shanahan, leading to another fight between Shanahan and Avalanche defenseman Adam Foote. Vernon joined the fray in an attempt to pull Foote off Shanahan. Roy saw this and yanked Vernon away from Foote, which escalated into the full-fledge fight – with dropped masks, gloves and blockers – that is shown in this picture.
